The Combinations Behind a Declaration
Before thinking about tactics, learn what the table accepts as a valid Rummy hand. The three terms below explain the usual building blocks. Sorting reveals possible combinations; draws and format rules still determine what qualifies.
Three Terms to Recognise:
- A Run of Cards: A sequence contains consecutive cards within one suit, such as 5♦–6♦–7♦. The usual requirement includes a pure sequence , formed without substituting a joker.
- Matching Ranks: A set groups three or four equal ranks in different suits; three Kings illustrate the idea.
- A Substitute Card: A joker can fill permitted gaps in combinations. It cannot replace the separate requirement for a qualifying pure sequence.
